Vom Abitur in Oregon
Lesen, Schreiben, Rechnen ist nicht mehr. [Nachtrag]
Laut Foxnews hat die Gouverneurin der Demokraten-Partei von Oregon, Kate Brown, ein Gesetz unterschrieben, das die Anforderung abschafft, dass – so verstehe ich das jetzt – Schüler zum Abitur noch ausreichende Kenntnisse in Lesen, Schreiben und Rechnen nachweisen müssen.
Gov. Kate Brown, the Oregon Democrat, signed a bill last month with little fanfare that drops the requirement that high school students prove proficiency in reading, writing or math before graduation, a report said.
Ich verstehe das jetzt mal so, dass „graduation“ hier den High-School-Abschluss meint. Ich habe noch überlegt, ob das vielleicht eher die Aufnahmetests meint, also eher so den Zugang zur High-School, aber das passt nicht richtig. Und high school graduation wird durchaus mit Abitur übersetzt.
Foundations for a Better Oregon said in a statement at the time that the bill is intended to “truly reflect what every student needs to thrive in the 21st century.” Supporters of the bill insist that considering math and reading essential skills has been an unfair challenge for students who do not test well. The report said the requirement was first suspended at the start of the pandemic.
Man will sich mehr auf das konzentrieren, was man im 21. Jahrhundert braucht. Lesen, Schreiben, Rechnen anscheinend nicht. Das zu verlangen sei deshalb unfair gegenüber den Schülern, die das nicht so können.
Charles Boyle, the deputy communications director from Brown’s office, told the paper in an email that staff from the governor’s office informed legislative staffers about the bill’s signing on the day it was passed. He also said that the new standards for graduation will help benefit the state’s “Black, Latino, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Tribal, and students of color.”
Der Grund ist also, dass das Abitur damit für alle anderen außer Weißen leichter wird und ihnen hilft.
Einerseits schimpfen sie auf white supremacy, andererseits unterstellen sie, dass eigentlich nur Weiße gut lesen, schreiben, rechnen können.
Ich rätsele noch über diesen Satz:
The paper reported that the bill could stay in effect for five years until new requirements.
Wer soll das Gesetz in fünf Jahren noch lesen können?
Müsste es nicht eher heißen, dass das Gesetz so lange in Kraft bleibt, wie noch jemand da ist, der es lesen kann?
Das hier ist wohl das Gesetz. Betrifft wohl die Abitur-Jahrgänge 2021 bis 2024, und könnte auch mit Corona zusammenhängen.
Allowing for this review, students will not be required to show proficiency in Essential Skills as a condition of receiving a high school diploma during the 2021-2022, 2022-2023, and 2023-2024 school years.
Was sind diese „Essential Skills“, die für das Abitur nicht mehr verlangt werden? Das sind sogar neun.
- Read and comprehend a variety of text
- Write clearly and accurately
- Apply mathematics in a variety of settings
- Listen actively and speak clearly and coherently
- Think critically and analytically
- Use technology to learn, live, and work
- Demonstrate civic and community engagement
- Demonstrate global literacy
- Demonstrate personal management and teamwork skills
Wenn man sich mal die Erläuterungen dazu ansieht, graust es einem, weil damit nicht etwa gemeint ist, dass die schreiben können wie ein Schriftsteller, sondern mehr so, dass man es überhaupt verstehen kann: „Use appropriate conventions to write clearly and coherently, including correct use of grammar, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, sentence construction, and formatting.“
Das war bei uns eigentlich Stoff der Klassen 3 bis 7. Klassenarbeit Diktat. Danach Aufsatz schreiben.
Müssen die dort nicht mehr können, um ein Abitur zu bekommen. Aber was denn dann? Waffenkunde?
Oregon lawmakers have passed a bill that will suspend the Essential Skills graduation requirement for students for the next three years.
Senate Bill 744 also directs the state Department of Education to use the suspension to evaluate how Oregon assesses student knowledge in their pursuit of a diploma. Among other things, education leaders are tasked with comparing diploma requirements in different states, making recommendations for state requirements to reduce disparities, and determining whether requirements for diplomas have been applied inequitably to different student populations.
“With SB 744, Oregon can ensure high school diplomas are rigorous, relevant, and truly reflect what every student needs to thrive in the 21st century,” Foundations for a Better Oregon said in a statement supporting the bill. “An inclusive and equitable review of graduation and proficiency requirements, when guided by data and grounded in a commitment to every student’s success, will promote shared accountability and foster a more just Oregon.”
Supporters also say testing on essential skills has historically hurt those with poor test-taking skills who would otherwise graduate.
Weil die Abituranforderungen bisher immer die verletzt haben, die sie nicht erfüllt haben, weil sie ja Abitur gemacht hätten, wenn man das nicht von ihnen verlangt hätte.
Also: Man muss für das Abiture nicht mehr Lesen und Schreiben können. Denn das wäre unfair denen gegenüber, die nicht Lesen und nicht Schreiben könnten, weil die ja Abitur machen würden, wenn man das gar nicht verlangte.
Scharfe Logik.
Ich muss mal fragen, ob ich in Oregon einen Pilotenschein machen kann. Und Chrirurg werden.

Das ist natürlich einzusehen. Wie soll man auch lesen und schreiben lernen können, wenn im letzten Jahr vor dem Abitur die Schule ausfällt?
Nachtrag: Das ist eigentlich exakt der Einstieg in den Plot im Film „Idiocracy“. Zwei Leute sollen für ein Experiment in eine Kälteschlafkammer, werden aber darin vergessen und bleiben lange Zeit (Jahrhundert? Mehrere?) darin, bis sie in einer völlig verblödeten Zukunft wieder aufwachen und die Leute alle unfassbar doof sind, nichts mehr lernen, und die beiden, obschon in unserer Zeit eigentlich auch schon unterbelichtet, dort dann der King sind.
