Nationals Senator Matt Canavan says there is an “absolute double standard” being exhibited by state premiers who ban Australians going to the footy due to coronavirus concerns but are “all sweet” with allowing Black Lives Matter protests.

As many as 50,000 people are expected to attend Black Lives Matter protests in Victoria on Saturday and thousands more are expected in Sydney on the same day in widespread rallies.

Victoria’s mass gathering laws are restricted to a maximum of 20 people but state police have refrained from declaring the event illegal, while social distancing regulations will remain in place.

“I don’t know what state premiers are doing here, they’re certainly being inconsistent,” Mr Canavan told Sky News host Peter Gleeson.

“If you can’t go to the footy, if you can’t go to concerts, if you can’t even go to church in big numbers at least … why is it okay to get out on the streets and protest”.

“There’s an absolute double standard here”.
